5-Day London Travel Guide

As I enjoy traveling, I wanted to share my love of travel with my daughter and take her on a trip of her choice and she chose to visit London, mostly due to the fact she is a huge Harry Potter fan, and she wanted to visit some of the same locations where the movie was filmed.

London England was an unforgettable city full of history that we packed into five full days. From exploring royal elegance at Buckingham Palace and Kensington Palace to the architectural wonder of Tower Bridge, every corner we took in the city was full of culture and historical charm.

As we strolled through Borough Market or Covent Garden’s we were tempted with mouthwatering street food and gourmet delights. We also visited the world’s first Hard Rock Cafe where we were drawn in with its nostalgic rock n’ roll history. Rock n’ roll playing in the background brings back childhood memories.

Visit the dazzling sights and sounds of Piccadilly Circus or Trafalgar Square for an evening full of fanciful chocolates at Fortnum & Mason or exquisite shopping in an eclectic and upscale atmosphere.

Total cost for this trip can be found near the end of this blog post

Flight to London from the United States

We started our trip from Orlando, Florida on Norse airline and took a direct flight to London Gatwick airport (LGW) which was closest to the villa that we stayed at while visiting London. Check in/out was an easy process at both airports. Before you go, make sure your passport is up to date and expires greater than 6 months past travel dates.

Our flight to London was very smooth on Norse airline and we didn’t encounter any problems along the way. We did pay for a meal on the plane which was $20 per meal per person. I wouldn’t pay for a meal the next time and instead I would pack snacks that you can bring with you or purchase once inside the airport. The food was ok, not terrible, but not our favorite and I didn’t feel it was worth the $20 especially if you have picky eaters.

This was our first overnight flight, and I didn’t sleep at all. First, I have a hard time sleeping places other than a bed, and second, the person next to me kept his TV on the whole night even though he wasn’t using it therefore the light from it kept me awake. Next time I will purchase a stuffable neck pillow and sleep mask to use to hopefully help me sleep. The seats were what you would typically find on an airline and the restrooms met our needs.

Our flight home was during the day, so I didn’t have to worry about trying to sleep.

Even though I didn’t sleep well, I would definitely take an overnight flight again, so I don’t lose a day of exploring due to air travel, but I would just add a few extra amenities for comfort. We only took carry-on luggage and a backpack and it fit perfectly in the overhead bins.

Other airport options would be Heathrow depending on where you are staying in London.

And by the way, the sunrise was absolutely breathtaking. See the pic below, the sky was a beautiful color of pink and purple. How amazing!! #flyNorse

Total flight cost: 2 adults, from Orlando, Florida (MCO) to Gatwick, London (LGW) in June 2024 total $1,735.58. It was cheaper to fly out of Orlando than Tampa.

Day 1 Central/West London

London Eye, Big Bus Tours, Kensington Palace, Poppie’s Fish & Chips, Notting Hill

Once we arrived in London, we found the correct Tube (aka, train) to ride so we could quickly drop off our luggage at the Grand Tulse Hill Villa we were staying at (more details below on this villa) and headed straight to London Center via the Tube where we started our tour of the city. Oh and, Mind the Gap!!

London Eye

The iconic London Eye ride provides breathtaking panoramic views of London’s skyline in a glass capsule. This ride is 30-minutes long and it continuously moves and only stops if needed to help someone exit or enter the ride. The ride is narrated throughout the 30-minutes and provides great views of the Thames River, Big Ben, the Houses of Parliament, and St. Paul’s Cathedral. This is the world’s tallest observation wheel, and no London visit is complete without this tour.

Have your London Eye tickets booked in advance (see booking options below) as I was not able to pull up the tickets on my cell phone due to poor cell signal at the London Eye entrance. There is Wi-Fi nearby that the staff can help you connect to it if needed.

Once you arrive at the queue, they will not let you into the line until the time listed on your ticket. The line was long, and our wait was 50-minutes from the time we lined up, but it went rather quickly as the line continuously moves. If you get there early, take time and grab a souvenir at the local shops.

Address: Riverside Building, County Hall, London

Kensington Palace

Stopping in front of the beautiful Kensington Palace was a real treat and offered a glimpse into the life of royalty. This is the former home of Queen Victoria and the current residence of Prince William and Princess Kate, this palace blends history and beauty all in one.

Imagining Princess Diana strolling the sunken gardens she cared so much about gave me a small snippet of her daily life. She took time to get to know the gardeners and build a garden she loved. Later her sons would dedicate this garden space and erect a statue in her loving memory.

Take a tour of the palace where you can walk through the grand halls into the state rooms of grandeur. View royal portraits and personal artifacts that describe the stories of kings, queens, and princesses who lived there through the years. Step into the stunning King’s and Queens’ State Apartments and view the palace’s charm that inspires history lovers and royal enthusiasts alike.

A popular British food is fish and chips so of course we had to try this while in London. There are several Poppies Fish & Chips locations in London, but we chose this one as it was closest to our destinations for day 1. We had the typical Fish & Chips which was delivered hot to our table, and despite fish not being my favorite meal, we really enjoyed this British food. There are different types of fish to choose from on the menu. We also had the Sticky Toffee Pudding which was so delicious, and I highly recommend. It came with a scoop of ice cream to top it off! Yum!!

Once inside the Sky Garden, you will go through security before getting on the high-speed elevator up to the Sky Garden’s main atrium. This smaller market area offers many boutiques for shopping and cafes for food.

If you are a Harry Potter fan, you will want to take some time here as it once served as a filming location for Diagon Alley in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (2001). The market’s Victorian architecture, with its ornate roof, cobbled streets, and charming storefronts, provided the perfect setting for any wizarding experience.

Diagon Alley exterior shots were filmed here in Leadenhall Market where you will find the entrance to the Leaky Cauldron from the movie Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone and Prisoner of Azkaban. (the door tends to change color over time based on the current business decor; in 2024 it was yellow). The door location is a business so make sure not to disturb them as you take a picture.

Walking around and taking in the overwhelming atmosphere gave us a sense of the popularity of this market.

After walking around for a while we decided on trying a few different varieties of food.

To say my daughter was excited about seeing the Disney’s The Lion King at the Lyceum Theatre would be an understatement. She was ecstatic and couldn’t wait!! Seeing the Lion King in theater was on her bucket list and yes, we could see the Disney’s The Lion King production in the United States but how exciting to say you saw The Lion King theatre production in London!!! Yes, please!

The Lyceum Theatre in London is one of the city’s most iconic and historical theaters located in the West End near Covent Garden. This theatre opened in 1834 and has gone through many transformations and was having some work done while we were visiting the summer of 2024 as well. The elegant interior seats 2,100 patrons and provides many spectacular theatrical productions.

Since 1999, the Lyceum Theatre has been home to Disney’s The Lion King, one of the most successful and visually stunning musicals in the West End history. From the set design to the vibrant costumes, it captures the tales from the African savannah with its vibrant colors and detailed staging.

What an amazing experience watching Disney’s The Lion King at the Lyceum Theatre. The production and music kept our attention throughout with the impressive choreography and heartfelt performances and emotional depth. The show is a little over 2-hours with a 15-minute intermission. There are small binoculars at each seat you can use for a closeup view for $.50 (2 quarters). We watched the 2:30pm show.

We arrived 30 minutes early so we could take in the atmosphere of the theatre and find our seats. There is a theater bar where you can grab your snacks, a drink, memorabilia, or a program before settling into your seat for this memorable experience. This is a must see when visiting London.

You can head to the same store we shopped at, or you can purchase some at Covent Garden when you are there. You can sample their chocolates before you purchase them. We bought a few different flavors and ate the whole thing in 2 days, and the cost was £21.19.

The Palace is only open to the public during select months, but the exterior still offers plenty to see year-round.

A popular attraction is a viewing of Changing of the Guard, a century old tradition where the King’s Guard, dressed in their signature red tunics and bearskin hats, performs an elaborate handover ceremony. With the playing of military music, this parade takes place outside Buckingham Palace and last about 30-45 minutes.

The Changing of the Guard ceremony is super crowded during the parade with barely any room to move once the ceremony starts. We arrived an hour early in order to get up close to the guards and I would suggest you do the same if you want to stand right by the gates where you will get to see the bands compete and the changing of the guards. Because we were at the gate for the ceremony, we were unable to see the guards march along the streets so if you prefer to see them marching you will want to stand by the streets. You can also stand on the stairs of the large fountain to get a higher view of the ceremony but will be more at a distance. You choose which view is best for you.

BE WARNED: The police will walk around prior to the ceremony starting and warn everyone of pick pocketers that will walk around and steal from you, so they suggest you keep bags/purse in front of you at all times.

The Changing of the Guard ceremony starts at 11:00am and most people start lining up 30-minutes prior to the start of the parade. The ceremony takes place on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. There are three different locations to watch the Changing of the Guard: Buckingham Palace, St. James’s Palace, and Wellington Barracks.

The Anchor Pub Day 4 dinner option

During our River Cruise on the Thames River, the staff talked about the amazing pub food at The Anchor. Once we completed our river cruise we decided to try and find this pub for dinner. This is one of the oldest pubs in London which was rebuilt in 1676 after the great fire of London.

Upon entering the pub, you will find any open seat to sit at. There is a QR code on the table where you can order your food, or you go up to the bar on either floor and order your food. We were a little unsure what to do when we first entered the pub but following others lead, we ordered our food on the second floor at the bar and then proceeded to find our seats. We chose to sit outside where you will have a spectacular view of the Thames River.

You will also find open bar seating across from the restaurant at The Anchor: Bankside beer garden where you can order a beer, sit with friends (or strangers until you have had a few beers, and they become friends) and enjoy the bar atmosphere. The beer garden is also dog friendly.

Day 5 North London

King’s Cross Station, Harry Potter Shop, Pret A Manger, British Museum, St. Paul’s Cathedral, Millennium Bridge, Gourmet Pizza, Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre (optional day 4 or 5)

King’s Cross Station & The Harry Potter Shop

Taking the Tube into King’s Cross Station offers the perfect Harry Potter experience. My daughter was super excited to visit this location, and it wasn’t complete without a stop at King’s Cross Station.

While this is one of the busies stations in London, it is also home to the legendary Platform 9 3/4, where wizards can pose with the luggage trolley disappearing into the wall, just like in the Harry Potter films. This photo stop is FREE to visit but the queue may be long. We waited over an hour to have our picture taken at this location. Staff are taking pictures of you during this photo op, but you are free to take your own pictures. You can purchase the professional pictures inside the store if desired. We did not purchase the pictures but took our own. They do provide the Harry Potter scarfs for the photos and although you can take your own photos, they did seem annoyed at this. Maybe it was just the specific workers at the time.

Right next to the Platform 9 3/4, you will find The Harry Potter Shop which was a dream shop for my daughter to visit! Inside you will see a resemblance to Ollivander’s wand shop, packed full of merchandise, scarves and wands to collectable items you can only find at King’s Cross. Don’t forget to grab a magical chocolate frog to eat on your way out.

Even if you choose not to visit by train, you can still visit this iconic Harry Potter location within the train station, and this magical area is located outside the ticketed gates, so you do not need to purchase a train ticket to visit this shop.

Address: King’s Cross Station, London

Day 5 Pret A Manger lunch option

While at King’s Cross Station, stop over to Pret A Manger for a large selection of snack and lunch options. Pret A Manger strives to prepare fresh foods daily. Most shops have their own kitchen to prepare each item on site for the freshest ingredients every time. They sell sandwiches, bakery items, soups, fruits, salads, drinks and more. They specialize in preparing organic coffee and the funds they give back to farmers for further production. There is a Pret A Manger everywhere in London giving you the opportunity to support their business.

Hours: typically opens around 6:00am and closes between 19:00-22:00pm. Hours vary by location.

Take a Bus or Walk to the British Museum

Walk: Start by walking across Euston Road and continue straight then turn left at Camden Town Hall onto Judd Street and turn right onto Bidborough Street. Turn left at Mabledon Place and follow it through Cartwright Gardens as it turns into Marchmont Street. Then turn right onto Russell Square and cross through Russell Square Gardens and turn left onto Montague Street and then right onto Great Russell Street. There are several turns here so I would use Apple Maps to guide you. This is a 23-minute walk.

Bus: Walk to King’s Cross St Pancras Underground Station (Stop R) about 3-minutes. board the N91 bus toward Trafalgar Square. Exit the bus at Southampton Row (Stop B). Walk about 7-minutes to the British Museum.

British Museum

The British Museum is one of London’s iconic cultural attractions full of art and archeology and the good part is, visiting the British Museum is FREE. Here you will find over 8 million artifacts, including the Rosetta Stone, the Elgin Marbles, and ancient Egyptian mummies. Explore the grand hallways and travel around the world viewing the multiple artifacts from the Mesopotamia, Rome, China and American cultural accumulation of ancient artifacts.

You could spend hours wandering around this museum as there is so much history and things to see. Stroll through the gift shop for a souvenir and then grab a snack next door at the counter.

Book your British Museum tickets online for easy entry in the front of the building at the ticket holder line. We did not purchase advanced tickets but were still able to enjoy this attraction. Hint: If you do not purchase advanced tickets, just head to the back of the museum, where you can join the long line of others entering the museum. The line may be long, but it continuously moves so it will not take long to get inside once you pass through security. This option is still FREE. Once inside, take lots of pictures as you marvel at the sculptures, rare manuscripts, and ancient artifacts.

Take the Bus or Walk to St. Paul’s Cathedral

It is a 31-minute walk to St. Paul’s Cathedral from the British Museum. You will start on Great Russell Street and head to the right onto Bury Place. From here you will take a slight left turn onto Quietway Link. Continue onto High Holborn and then take a right onto Chancery Lane. Next, take a left onto Fleet Street and another left in 0.4 miles onto St. Paul’s Churchyard.

Taking the bus may be easier. Walk to Museum Street (Stop E), about a 4-minute walk and then board the N8 bus toward Hainault. Exit the bus at King Edward Street (Stop ST). Walk about 0.2 miles, 6-minutes to St. Paul’s Cathedral. A minimal £1.75 fee at the time of this writing.

St. Paul’s Cathedral

St. Paul’s Cathedral in London provides a breathtaking view as you stand or sit near the church and relax. This cathedral was designed by Sir Christopher Wen and was completed in 1710. This church has played a key role in British history by being the home to many royal celebrations from funerals to the wedding of Prince Charles and Princess Diana.

You can view this grand cathedral from outside on the steps or nearby on the streets. I remember sitting outside the cathedral and just starring in awe at the beauty of this building. The pictures do not show the true majesty of this place.

The cathedral is open Monday to Saturday for sightseeing. It is free to worship but if you would like to tour the inside of St. Paul’s Cathedral, that requires a fee.

Address: St. Paul’s Cathedral, London

Walk to Millennium Bridge

Take a 7-minute walk to the Millennium Bridge. Start on St. Paul’s Church Yard and walk a slight left continuing on St. Paul’s Church Yard and then take a right onto the same path. Next, take a right onto Peter’s Hill and a slight left to continue onto Peter’s Hill. Walk down the stairs and arrive at the start of the bridge.

Millennium Bridge - Harry Potter

Another Harry Potter film location is the Millennium Bridge. You can walk across this bridge which spans over the Thames River. Here you can find views of St. Paul’s Cathedral and Tate Modern.

This steel suspension bridge, connect St. Paul’s Cathedral to the South Bank and is the perfect spot to take photos of the amazing views.

Harry Potter fans will recognize this bridge from the Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince film where it was dramatically destroyed by Death Eaters in the opening scene. Luck fully, this was all movie magic, and the bridge remains strong and is a pedestrian friendly walkway for any Potterhead to enjoy. This bridge crosses over Thames River so you can quickly get to the south side of London.

Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre

This optional tour of Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre can be visited after crossing over the Millennium Bridge or you can visit this theater on day 4. See above for details.

Walk to Gourmet Pizza

Take a quick 13-minute walk to Gourmet Pizza. After you cross the Millennium Bridge you will go to the right and then turn left on the Thames Path and follow this to another set of stairs which you will take and then turn right onto the Upper Ground and the Gourmet Pizza restaurant will be on your right.

Day 5 Gourmet Pizza dinner option

After walking across the Millennium Bridge, we decided we were hungry and found the perfect pizza place at Gourmet Pizza to sit down and enjoy a meal before we ended our night. Our pizza was delicious with a wood-fire flavor. It was the perfect way to end our day as we sat in the outdoor seating area near the Thames River.

Address: 56 Upper Ground, South Bank, London

Hours: daily at 11:30am and close between 10:30-11:00pm

Red Phone Booths

You can find several of the iconic red phone booths in London that offer the perfect picture opportunity. Several of them are working pay phones and provide a location to access Wi-Fi. The iconic red phone booths have been around since the late 1800’s. By the 1990’s many of the original structures were either taken down or restored to what they are today. Make sure you take a picture next to one of the red phone booths that are located throughout London. No caption needed….. red phone both = London!

Where we stayed in London

We stayed at the Grand Tulse Hill Villa in Lambeth, London. Total cost for 2 people in 2024 was £542 + £150 deposit. We stayed there for 5 nights. This villa is a large older home with beautiful character and updated interior. Embrace the welcoming atmosphere as you are greeted by the host. After a brief tour of the home, we were taken to our room which was on the 3rd floor next to one of 3 restrooms. Each room had its own electronic lock system for added security. Our room had a double bed, small desk, and chair. We were given the Wi-Fi password so we could use our phones without using cell service.

Amenities include a full kitchen, 3 shared bathrooms, hair dryer, towels, private outdoor patio, and TV in the living room on the main floor.

I would stay here again but the only thing that made our trip not a 5 out 5 stars is the fact the bed was not very comfortable. It was only a full-size bed, and you could feel how thin the mattress was. Also, if you require a fan to sleep, they did not have one to use so I used the fan app on my phone.

Despite the bed, the location was really close to Tulse Hill Station, a 6-minute walk, making it convenient to walk to the station to hop on the Tube and get to all of the London attractions quickly. From Tulse Hill Station, it is about 43 minutes or 4.9 miles to The London Eye.

With a review of 9.1 rating on booking.com, this place is sure to meet your needs.

This villa is 23 miles north of the Gatwick Airport.

Getting around London - Transportation

Getting around London is easy and flexible due to the multiple transportation options. The London Underground (the “Tube”) is one of the fastest ways to travel across London with its connection to almost every neighborhood, while the iconic red buses are cheaper and offer a more scenic view. Both accept the same payment methods, see below.

For shorter trips, you can use the iconic London black cabs though this might be a slower option. London tends to be very walkable as well with many central locations that are easy to get to and then allow for walking to and from different restaurants, shopping and venues.

If you prefer to ride the river, there are ferries that travel along the Thames River for stunning views of famous landmarks such as Big Ben, The London Eye, London Bridge and Tower of London.

Walking around London

We did a lot of walking during our time in London. Once you get to the location you want to visit for the day, you can pretty much walk to all of the sites listed above. Remember, if you are not from England, they drive on the left side of the road. See the picture below, London has made it pretty easy to know which way the traffic is coming by painting signs on the road, so you know which way to look for oncoming traffic before you cross the road.

Apple Maps

As we traveled through London, I would use my Apple Maps all the time. I used this to help me find the Tube and when walking through the city.

Using Apple Maps for the Tube was easy. When you open Apple Maps, and type in where you want to go, it shows different transportation options (car, walk, Tube, bike, etc). I chose the Tube icon, and it will tell you exactly what Tube and/or bus to take and it will show you all of the stops along the way. Make sure you purchase a battery power pack as using your Apple Maps all day will drain your battery. Picture below shows a screenshot of Apple Maps.

Tube

Getting off and on the bus and Tube was an easy process. Only a couple times in the beginning we didn’t get off or stop at the right place, but we quickly got off the next stop and were able to get back on track. Follow your Apple Maps closely.

You can purchase an Oyster Card which allows you to put money on the card so you can get on the bus or Tube quickly with one swipe. Purchasing an Oyster Card requires a small non-refundable fee of $7 and then you can add how much money you think you will need during your trip. You can add more money at a later date if needed. Tube stations have machines to purchase the card.

I do not recommend purchasing an Oyster Card. You can instead just use your credit card if it has a contactless credit card with the three curved lines on it or pay with Google or Apple Pay. We used Apple Pay each time by tapping it on the scanner at the entrance of each Tube station or on the bus. Using this method saves you the $7 Oyster Card fee plus you do not overspend by putting too much money on the card and not using it all. The price to ride is the same fee whether you use an Oyster Card or contactless method.

Mind the Gap will often be heard when boarding the Tube. This famous message provides a warning to be careful when stepping on and off the Tube as there is often a gap between the Tube and the walkway.

TIP: don’t forget to tap your pay method each time you leave the Tube station as well. If you forget to tap it, they could charge you for the furthest away destination therefore you would end up paying more.

Big Bus Tours

Big Bus hop-on, hop-off tours to include Thames River Cruise and London Eye tickets.

When you are using the Big Bus, do not mistake it for the regular red bus throughout London. It can be confusing if you do not read the following information!

If you look at the Big Bus picture below, you will see it clearly says BIG BUS on the side of the bus. That will give you a clue that you are getting on the right bus for the Big Bus tours. Near some of the locations, you will find Big Bus tour staff that can give you a map of the route and help guide you to where you want to be. They are extremely helpful in guiding you. Not all stops have a staff available. You can also find ear buds on the bus for you to use; you simply plug them into the 3.5 mm earbuds jack on the back of the seats and listen to a guided tour through London.

Take a tour of London on Big Bus Tours. A great way to take in the views of the city while enjoying the historical views along the way.

Double Decker Bus

The double-decker red bus in London feels like stepping into a post card as the famous red bus is a symbol of London’s transportation.

Once you walk on the bus, you will tap your pay method and grab a seat either upstairs for an amazing view of the city, or on the lower floors. Inside, you might find an automatic voice telling you each upcoming stop or some buses have an electronic board with upcoming bus stop information. You do not have to tap your pay method again when you exit a bus.

Each bus stop is well marked with signs pictured below. Your Apple Map will tell you the bus stop number you need to find to get to your next location.

Black Cab

Throughout London you will find taxis and official British Black Cabs. You can grab one from the street when the yellow TAXI light is on or find them at taxi ranks near train stations, hotels, or busy areas. Once inside, you will find cabbies who are knowledgeable of the city and can provide great travel information. Fares are metered and you can usually pay by card or cash. Black Cabs are a pricier transportation option but can take you directly to where you want to go.

River Cruise

Taking a river cruise or tour on the Thames River is a beautiful and relaxing way to see London. You can hop on a Thames Clippers boat which is part of London’ public transport system or join a sightseeing cruise that runs between major piers like Westminster, London Eye, Tower Bridge and Greenwich. Some boats have snacks or drinks you can purchase. This option is often less crowded and gives you a different view of the city.

We used the City Cruise as part of our Big Bus Hop-on Hop-off tour. It was easy to use and provided a fun way to get around London. On our trip, we were able to sit on the top deck and the crew provided a commentary of the surrounding area and tried to add humor throughout. I would recommend adding this option to your Big Bus tour!

Must-haves when visiting London

Here are multiple items we purchased and used on our long flight to London and things we used while traveling through the city. Add these to your cart to make your trip easier.

  • 20-inch carry on suitcase with wheels. This was the perfect size for carry on and it has TSA approved locks.

  • Luggage scale - make sure you can keep all of your souvenirs in your carryon

  • 3.5 mm jack earbuds for the airplane to listen to the on-flight movies

  • Checkered travel cosmetic bag. I loved this small bag to put toothpaste, shampoo, etc in as we traveled.

  • Lululemon belt bag. I carry this everywhere with me as we explore the city.

  • Power plug adapter for international travel. A must have when traveling to London. Outlets are not the same as the United States and you will need an adapter in order to plug in your electronics. We used this one and it worked great. It is also adaptable to use in other countries.

  • Waterproof jacket for those cooler days or when it rains.

  • Compact umbrella as you never know when the weather may change.

  • Women’s silicone wedding bands. When I am traveling, I usually wear silicone wedding bands to limit the risk of losing my wedding rings.

  • Stuffable neck pillow - the perfect addition to a long flight to help you sleep and limit clothing items in your carry-on luggage.

  • Eye mask - to help you sleep and to keep the light out of your eyes while on an overnight flight. This option also straps your head in so you can keep your head steady.

  • Traveling with kids? Grab my Space Themed Travel Journal to keep them busy on the flight. Need a place to keep notes or journal your trip? Grab my Travel Journal to keep a journal of your trip to London.

London Tips

  • Make sure you have a contactless way to use the Tube or bus. I recommend using Apple Pay.

  • One of my banks charged me an international fee for each transaction but the other bank did not, check with your bank for added fees before you travel. I was charged anywhere from $0.02 to $0.27 per transaction.

  • ALWAYS stand on the right side of escalators in stations to let people easily pass

  • Walk on the left side up and down stairs

  • Bring a jacket or umbrella as weather can change quickly

  • Take good walking shoes as you will be walking a lot

  • Museums get busier after 11am

  • Public restrooms in museums are hard to find and often have a long line

  • Book some locations ahead of time such as the Sky Garden or afternoon tea

  • Tipping is usually already added to your bill

  • Cash is rarely accepted at restaurants

  • Remember, they drive on the left side of the road so look both ways before crossing the road

  • Londoners are often quiet on the Tube so stay fairly quiet and do not talk loudly

  • The word “queue” is used when waiting instead of “line”

Using your cell phone in London

When traveling out of the country it is important to determine if you have international cell phone coverage before you use your phone internationally and get charged a hefty fee.

I have Verizon and the fee is $12 per day per phone line and can be used in over 210 countries. If you do not get an international plan, you will incur large roaming fees.

When we traveling to London, I purchased the Airalo eSim card so I could use my phone. With Airalo eSim, you will download and install a digital data pack that can be used in over 200 countries. You will have access to the internet and be able to make phone calls while traveling abroad. With a few short steps, you will have access quickly on your phone.

I highly recommend you purchase an Airalo eSim card before you go and this option is cheaper than Verizon’s international plan. I will be honest, it took me a minute to figure out but once I did, it worked pretty well!

While visiting London, you have the opportunity to add more tours and visit the inside of places like Kensington Palace, Westminster Abbey, Buckingham Palace and more. These admissions will significantly increase your budget, but they can also deepen your sense of history and create more unforgettable experiences to this already amazing vacation.

You will also find that some prices reflect US dollars while others reflect London pounds or both. This was based off of if I saved the receipt and/or used my bank statement.

Total cost for a 7-day trip, 5-full days in London, $3,731.29 with an estimated total of £2,804.06

A Perfect 5-day Trip to London

Is five days in London enough? I would say it was the perfect amount for us, but our days were packed with iconic landmarks, rich history, and unforgettable moments with little down time. From standing below Big Ben to exploring historical museums and strolling through charming neighborhoods like Covent Garden and Notting Hill, and cruising along the Thames River on a river cruise, every day was new and exciting.

If you wanted a slower pace or wanted to see more attractions, I would say adding a day or two more would be good. There are also so many attractions outside of London that you could add to your trip. Here is a list of tours outside of London:

  1. Stonehenge, Windsor Castle and Bath with Pub Lunch in Lacock

  2. Harry Potter Warner Bros. Studio Tour with Transport from London

  3. Cotswolds Small Group Tour from London

  4. London Walking Food Tour With Secret Food Tours

With a city that is so walkable making it easy to get around, London provided such a fun mixture of sightseeing, culture, and adventure. Whether this is your first trip or a return trip, I know you will find this 5-day budget friendly self-guided itinerary an incredible way to discover London’s most iconic locations and make lasting memories.

Enjoy the journey,
