The Perfect 5-Day Dubai Itinerary: Desert Safaris, Souks, and Skyline Views
Published May 2026
Dubai was on my son’s bucket list for his senior trip. He was drawn in by the city’s mix of futuristic skyline and rich culture. I had created an incredible five-day itinerary, from watching the city sparkle from the top of the Burj Khalifa to riding across golden dunes on a desert safari ending with a traditional barbecue dinner under the stars. Our plans also included exploring the vibrant souks, cooling off at Aquaventure Waterpark at Atlantis, The Palm, and cruising through the marina on a traditional dhow to take in Dubai’s glittering skyline at night.
Unfortunately, due to unexpected political circumstances, our trip was canceled by the airline at the last minute, and we had to redirect our travel plans. But after spending so much time carefully researching and mapping out what would have been an unforgettable experience, I didn’t want that work to go to waste so I decided to share my Dubai travel itinerary with you that is perfect for first-time visitors.
This guide is based on that detailed planning—a five-day Dubai itinerary designed to help you experience the very best this city has to offer, even if we didn’t get to experience it (yet) ourselves. But don’t let my limitations persuade you, I trust this itinerary will work and I encourage you to take the trip to Dubai.

Where is Dubai Located?
Dubai is a city located in the southeast coast of the Persian Gulf in the United Arab Emirates. It has a population of over 3.5 million people and has grown from a small fishing village to the world’s most modern and luxurious destination. The discovery of oil in the 1960’s helped this rapid development. Today it is known for its futuristic skyline, global business influence, and iconic attractions like the Burj Khalifa, making this a top destination for travelers.
Best Time to Visit Dubai
The weather can be extremely hot in Dubai due to it being located in a desert region, so it is important to plan your trip around the best weather. If this will be your first visit to Dubai, I encourage you to plan around the weather that will be most comfortable for you.
November to March is the best time to visit Dubai and is considered peak tourist season for cooler weather. During this time, the temperatures average 75-85 degrees. This is the perfect temperature for visiting the beach, desert safaris, outdoor dining and sightseeing. Hotel prices tend to be higher in these months and attractions may be more crowded.
June to September is extremely hot but can also be cheaper to visit with flights being at its lowest. Temperatures can get up to 105 degrees with high humidity. If visiting in the summer months, visit the Dubai Mall or other indoor attractions to cool off. Although it is a cheaper time to visit, some activities are not available in the summer months such as the Miracle Garden.
October is when the weather starts to cool down and beach days become more enjoyable.
Where to Stay in Dubai?
Choosing where to stay in Dubai can help with your trip planning. Some areas are closer to attractions while others offer a luxury feel. Depending on your style you can choose from the list below, the best area to fit your budget and trip style.
During our travel to Dubai, and months of research, we were going to stay at The First Collection Dubai Business Bay because we fell in love with the rooftop deck that overlooked the city. I felt this would be the perfect place to unwind at night with the warm air and a cold drink in our hands. This hotel had views of the canal, 2 swimming pools, balcony rooms, lounge, gym and more, making this the perfect budget friendly hotel in the area.

5-Day Itinerary for Visiting Dubai
Our five-day itinerary was busy, but I felt there was enough down time giving you time to relax at the hotel and watch the night sky light up with the beauty of Dubai. This was a well-planned itinerary that I spent months planning that will help guide you during your trip to Dubai and provides an array of attractions from a dune safari, shopping at the Dubai Mall, to a cultural experience at the souks in Old Dubai. There is something for everyone on your trip and I planned this trip to minimize travel time between each location.
Day 1: Arrive in Dubai at night, check into the hotel and relax
Day 2: Dubai Marina Walk, Dhow Dinner Cruise
Day 3: Dubai Frame, Dune Safari
Day 4: Old Dubai Souks, Dubai Mall, Burj Khalifa, Dubai Fountain
Day 5: Day trip to Abu Dhabi
Day 6: Aquaventure World Water Park, Atlantis at the Palm, Jumeriah
Is Dubai Worth Visiting?
Dubai has a lot to offer and would be a great place to visit if you are wanting a luxury experience or old world charm. Dubai has a reputation for being one of the safest major cities in the world. In fact, it is said that you can leave your wallet on the side of the street, walk away, and no one would steal it. Dubai offers a diversity of desert, modern architecture, cultural tours and a variety of entertainment. If you want to be dazzled with night skies and immersed in culture, then Dubai is worth the visit!

Things you Need to Know Before Visiting Dubai
Currency in Dubai is the Dirham (AED) - credit cards are accepted almost anywhere in Dubai. Carry small cash for markets or small vendors
Language - Arabic but English is widely spoken and many signs are in both Arabic and English
Dress expectations - as a tourist, casual dress is fine as long as it isn’t too skimpy. There is an expectation to dress modestly when in public spaces. If you visit a mosque or other religious sites, women are expected to wear long sleeves, long pants/skirt, and a headscarf. Men are expected to wear long pants and covered shoulders.
Public behavior - avoid public displays of affection, no loud or disruptive behavior, and dress modestly in public areas.
Alcohol - alcohol is only allowed in license restaurants, bars, hotels, and clubs. Drinking in public or being intoxicated outside of licensed venues can lead to fines
Tipping is 10-15% in Dubai, check to see if tip was already added first
Free Wi-Fi can be found in the malls, hotels, and cafes
If you do not have an international cell phone plan you may need to consider purchasing a SIM card prior to arrival or at the airport. Use Airalo to keep connected while traveling abroad. Using Airalo gives you access to your phone so you can make phone calls, use maps, and more.
There are no addresses in Dubai, use landmarks to know where you are going and to direct your Careem driver
A different Metro card is needed in Dubai than in Abu Dabi
Register for the STEP program at step.state.gov. This program will keep you updated on any unrest in the country you are traveling to
Saying Hello = Marhaban (Mar Huh Bun)
Is Dubai family friendly? - the short answer, yes. I read a post on Instagram one day that at night, the police were monitoring the beach and told men they had to leave so the women and children could enjoy the area safely. I feel the Dubai police will monitor their city well and it is rated one of the safest cities to visit.
How Many Days Should You Spend in Dubai
I would say after months of research, you should plan to spend 5-7 days in Dubai. Our plan was to spend 5-days but if time and money wasn’t an option, I would spend 7 days so we could spend time doing more tours and attractions.
Dubai is the Best Layover City
Dubai has become a popular layover destination for international travelers. If you have a 24-48-hour layover in Dubai, this gives you plenty of time to explore the major highlights. The airport is close to the city making it an efficient transportation and close to tourists’ area which gives you plenty of time to explore the city before you have to catch your flight out of Dubai. Downtown Dubai is about 15-20 minutes from the airport and about 30 minutes to the Dubai Marina. Emirates Dubai Stopover Program offers travelers discounted hotel packages for an easy stopover experience. English is widely spoken here making it easy to navigate the city for the day.
If a visa is required for entry into Dubai, you may qualify for a 48-hour or 96-hour visa.
How to Save Money While in Dubai
Dubai is known for its luxury and that often comes with a higher price tag. However, if you are a budget traveler like me, you will want to consider these alternatives to save money.
Use the Metro more often
Staying in downtown Dubai is often cheaper
We were going to travel in the summer months, which is their off season due to the heat. Hotels were cheaper during this time
Visit free attractions such as the beaches or souks or the Dubai Mall
Dubai Entry Requirements and Visas
All travelers entering the United Arab Emirates are required to have a valid passport for at least 6-months from the date of travel. We would be visiting Dubai from the United States, and we were not required to obtain a Visa, however, always check updated visa rules before visiting.
A visa is not required from the following countries:
Many European countries
United Kingdom
Australia
Canada
United States
New Zealand
Japan
South Korea
Saudi Arabia
Kuwait
Qatar
Oman

How much does it cost to purchase gold jewelry in Dubai
A souvenir I wanted to purchase while in Dubai was a gold bracelet and I was curious how much a bracelet would cost so I did some research and found the following information. I thought I would share this information with you in case you were wanting to know the same thing.
Pricing depends on material and shop owners. You can negotiate the price of the bracelet and often if you cannot decide on a price and you choose to walk away, they may flag you down and offer you an even greater discount. Give it a try. The price of gold fluctuates so go into the souks with an idea of how much you want to pay, knowing the prices may be different than listed below.
Sterling silver: ~180 – 275 AED
14k gold-filled: ~300 – 350 AED
18k solid gold: 320 + AED (and up depending on chain type/weight)
Day 4: Day trip to Abu Dhabi: Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque
Morning: a day trip from Dubai is close to 1 hour 15 minutes or longer depending on traffic.
8:30am - 10:30am - Sheikh Zayed (pronounced -shake zy yid) Grand Mosque – This mosque is free to visit but you need to reserve a time slot online. Out of respect, you will need to have your legs and shoulders covered and women need to have their hair covered to enter the mosque
Afternoon:
11:00am - 12:00pm - Corniche Beach and the Waterfront Promenade. Walk along the waterfront and palm-lined promenades.
12:45pm - 1:45pm - Eat at the Glo inside the Rosewood Hotel for good food and amazing views
2:15pm - 3:30pm - Emirates Palace Mandarin Oriental for a luxury atmosphere where you will see gold and marble interiors, beachfront and marina views
Evening:
5:00pm - Wahat Al Karama – head over here at sunset for a magnificent view of Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque for the perfect photo op with a reflection pool for spectacular views
6:30pm - return to Dubai
Once you are in Abu Dhabi you can take a Careem to get to each location. These locations are not within walking distance, so this is your best option unless you want to rent a car.
Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, photo credit wallpaperaccess.com
Day 5: Aquaventure World Water Park, Atlantis at the Palm, Jumeriah
Morning/afternoon: Atlantis Aquaventure Waterpark - tickets through Viator were $190.74 for two adults

BEST FOR: Beachside Riviera vibes & great al fresco dining
Burj Al Arab photo opportunities - a sail shaped hotel
Estimated Dubai Travel Costs
I am always a budget traveler, but I also want to make sure I experience all of the top attractions while visiting a location so although I consider this a budget friendly guide, I know overall, a trip to Dubai can seem extravagant but if you follow my simple itinerary and plan ahead, you too can afford this trip. So, is a trip to Dubai expensive? Read below for our estimated Dubai trip budget.
Flights - Swiss Airlines from Tampa Florida to Zurich Switzerland then to Dubai cost $2,020.66 roundtrip for two people
On our trip home, our flight was again going to stop at Zurich Switzerland, and I chose a 7-hour layover so we could explore Zurich before we headed home. Sadly, we didn’t get to experience this city, YET!
Hotels - The First Collection Dubai Business Bay for June 10-16, 2026, cost AED 1,751.12 ($476.86)
Tours and attractions - $734.46
Transportation - this price would vary whether you took the train or used Careem (Uber) during your travels. Estimated transportation expense between using Uber and the Metro could be around $200-350 total for the 5-days
Food - estimated daily dining cost for two people - Budget: $45-70, Mid-range $90-180, Fine dining $250+. $180×5=$900
Purchase SafetyWing travel insurance for emergencies - I have not used any travel insurance yet, but this one was recommended by others
Total estimated cost: $4,481.98
Your Flight: Dubai International Airport (DXB) is the nearest airport for commercial airlines. Check outCheapOairor Skyscanner for flight deals.
Best Tours and Experiences I Planned
I was so excited to take several of these tours and I wanted to share them with you. I researched and found the best tours, with the best ratings, and at a reasonable price for two. Check them out and book these tours for yourself! These are the only tours that I booked for this specific trip.
Desert Safari - Dubai Red Dunes ATV, Camels, Stargazing & 5* BBQ Al Khayma Camp
Dhow Dinner Cruise - Dhow Dinner Cruise 8:00pm (tickets booked Viator)
Burj Khalifa - sky views from the top
Dubai Frame - get a birds eye view of Dubai
Atlantis Aquaventure waterpark - the best way to cool off in the summer heat
Attractions we Skipped in Dubai to Make this Trip Affordable but Recommend
As a budget traveler there are many tours that we chose to skip to save money, and at some locations I created my own tour to save money (souks, Abu Dhabi). But if we didn’t have to worry about money, these are the other tours I would have booked. Although we skipped several of these attractions to make our trip more affordable, you could add them to your itinerary for even more fun! Adding more attractions, might suggest more days, or eliminating something from this detailed itinerary. Either way, these attractions will make your trip even more memorable.
Dubai Souk tour- personalized guided tour
Museum of the Future-the perfect location to see the future of the world
Dubai Miracle Garden (seasonal) - this attraction is not open in the summer months, but it would be a beautiful place to visit when it is in season
Dubai Fountain Boat Ride - located at the Dubai Mall
Ferrari World - explore Abu Dhabi and Ferrari World for the fastest roller coasters
Hot Air Balloon Ride over Dubai - what an incredible experience to fly over Dubai at sunrise with 60-minutes in the air
Dinner in the Sky Dubai - can you imagine being suspended 165 feet in the sky over the Dubai skyline while eating dinner prepared by your chef?
Dubai: Old Town, Souks, Street Food, Guided Tour & Abra Ride- prefer a guided tour so you can hear about the history of the area and explore the best of the souks, then this highly rated tour is for you
Abu Dhabi Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque Tour from Dubai- does figuring out your own Abu Dhabi tour sound scary? Then this tour is perfect for you with transportation to and from
Dubai Harbor: Luxury Yacht Tour with BBQ Options- see the night sky light up as you enjoy your BBQ meal onboard this beautiful yacht
Dubai Overnight Desert Safari, BBQ & Stargazing at Al Khayma Camp- enjoy an overnight campout in the desert by the campfire while falling asleep. Wake up 15-mnutes prior to sunrise for a once in a lifetime view.
How to Book Tours in Dubai
I used Viator to book all of my tours except the Burj Khalifa. I was so glad that I used Viator’s Book Now/Pay Later option as I was able to get a refund for every tour I booked through Viator since my trip was cancelled.
I booked my Burj Khalifa tickets directly through Burj Khalifa and although I knew the tickets were non-refundable, I was hoping they would accommodate me and issue a refund since it wasn’t my fault our trip got cancelled but they would not issue a refund, they did however offer to extent my dates for 6 months and allow me to rebook but I had booked our trip to visit Shanghai, China instead and wouldn’t have an opportunity to travel to Dubai during that time frame so I had to forfeit my cost.
When booking attractions in the USA or overseas. We almost always use Viator or Get Your Guide to book tours as we travel.
Dubai Transportation Guide
There are a few different options for getting from one location to another in Dubai. From luxury private transfers to Careem (Dubai’s Uber), or the Metro for a cheaper option. Before you visit Dubai, make sure to download the Careem app so you are able to access a ride, similar to Uber, for a quick and easy ride. As you use Careem, remember that Dubai doesn’t have addresses so you will need to know the name of the location you wish to go so you can let the driver know.
Careem (Uber) - download the app and use for quick and private transfers.
Metro - You will need a NOL card to have access to the Metro - I recommend a silver card for tourists
Hours typically start at 5:30am (8:00am on Sundays) and close at midnight
No eating, drinking or chewing gum on the metro or you may get a fine
Buy your NOL card at metro station kiosks or local supermarkets
Use cash, visa, or Master Card to purchase NOL card
Purchase NOL card
Silver – regular card (25 AED )(includes 6 AED for the card and 19 AED credit to use)
Cost depends on what zone you are going to /coming from
Can purchase multiple cards at a time
You can check your NOL Card balance at ticket vending machines, through the RTA Dubai app, or by tapping your card on the card reader machines located at metro stations.
Walking - in the cooler months, you would be able to walk to several of the locations easily.
Travel to London and check out this blog post before you go: The Perfect Budget Friendly 5-Day Self-Guided Tour of London, England
What We Would Do Differently
We chose our hotel based on location and the roof top deck. But later I realized that we would have had to walk about 20 minutes to the Metro which in the summer heat, might have been difficult. I might reconsider my location next time but if you prefer to Uber, then this location would still work.
Based on my work schedule, traveling in the summer is my only option. If I didn’t base my travels around the school calendar, then traveling to Dubai outside of the summer months would be a better option.
Packing List for Dubai
Travel adapters - when in another country, you will need a travel adapter to plug in your electronics
Belt bag - I use my belt bag for all my travels to carry my ID, credit cards, maps, etc
20-in carry-on luggage - the perfect size for carry-on
Checkered cosmetic bag- I loved this bag and used it to carry my soaps, lotions, and more
Silicone wedding bands - I would hate to lose my wedding ring while I travel so I often wear these wedding bands
Portable power banks - I am always taking to many photos when I travel and using the maps app so definitely need additional battery chargers
Space themed kids travel journal - I created the perfect journal to keep kids busy on a long flight
Check out this cruise option for your next trip: Bahama Cruise on the MSC Magnifica Cruise Line
Final Thoughts
Dubai is a destination that blends modern architecture with old style culture. You can ride the Abra to the souks or find world-class attractions and luxury dining options all in one city. Whether you want to explore the cultural neighborhoods like Al Fahidi, relax on Jumeriah Beach, or visit the city’s iconic landmarks like the Burj Khalifa, Dubai offers something for every traveler. I am sad that we did not get to take this amazing trip so I hope you can use this information to plan your trip to Dubai and comment below what you loved most about visiting Dubai and help me live vicariously through you! Planning this trip made me excited to visit Dubai and I hope to someday get to experience this city in person!
Enjoy the journey,
