Turkey Swamp Park and Campground

If you are looking for a peaceful getaway in nature but still want to be close to New York City, Turkey Swamp Park in Freehold, New Jersey is the perfect place to be. This scenic park offers a beautiful lake that is ideal for kayaking, canoeing, or just enjoying the quietness of the lake with trees that frame the water. You will also find hiking trails, fishing, archery, and athletic field at this park.

The campground provides comfortable amenities including restrooms, showers, picnic areas, playgrounds, and hiking trails, making this the perfect spot for families or those looking for outdoor activities.

Turkey Swamp Park is in a convenient location and just a short drive from New York City. This allows you to spend your days at the lake enjoying the view or taking day trips to the Big Apple where you can experience the vibrant city life without paying the high hotel fees.

Address: 200 Georgia Road, Freehold, New Jersey

Park Hours: opens daily at 7am. Closing varies by season but typically from 5:30pm in the winter months to 7pm in the summer.

Turkey Swamp Park is open year-round, campground is seasonal.

Side note: the only downfall was the tolls back and forth to the city which can really add up quick.

Stop at the office for campground bookings, park information, water vessel rentals, picnic area, restrooms, parking, small playground, path to the lake and more. The staff are eager to help you learn about their park and offer assistance when needed.

Lake at Turkey Swamp Park

The 17-acre lake provided a beautiful backdrop as you sit and enjoy the peace and quiet of this park. The lake provides multiple activities from boating, kayaking, canoeing, fishing, and ice skating.

Water vessel rentals: during the summer months you can rent kayaks, rowboats, and canoes at the Campground office from April to November. Life vests can also be rented. CASH OR CHECK ONLY.

Campground

We stayed 3 nights at this campground during our trip to New York City. Our site was pull through and offered plenty of space for our tent and car.

This campground offers 64 pull-through sites that can accommodate tents, campers, travel trailers and RV’s up to 40 feet. Most of the sites can be reserved while other sites are on a first come, first served basis. Reservations can be made online. A 2-night minimum stay is required on weekends, and a 3-night minimum stay during holidays. Check in time is 2pm.

The campground is open from April 1 to November 15 every year. We stayed here in June, and the weather was cool at night so bring layers to keep warm.

Amenities: playground, restrooms with flush toilets, hot showers, electrical sites, trash can at each site, water, dump station, laundry, fire ring for cooking or campfires, and picnic tables.

June 2025 our nightly fee was $45

Restrooms

Restrooms with warm showers are available next to the playground for convivence. The showers were clean and provided privacy with shower curtains at each stall. Hooks are provided and a bench to sit your items on as you take a shower.

Useful camping items

Children’s playground

This playground is located within the campground and next to the restrooms. This is a beautiful area surrounded by trees, providing lots of fun for the kids. There are benches for the adults to sit on as they watch their kids play.

Laundry and ice machine

You will also find a laundromat, bags of ice and vending machine near the restroom.

Hiking and Archery

There are 9.15 miles of trail available within the park. Trails include hiking, biking, and horseback riding.

Archery Range is open year-round. There are 7 shooting stations with ranges from 15-40 yards.

Final thoughts

Camping at Turkey Swamp Park offers the best of both worlds with easy access to the excitement of New York City and the peaceful escape in nature after a busy day of sightseeing. Explore the city’s busy streets, famous landmarks, endless attractions and nightlife, and then return to your campsite surrounded by trees for the perfect night’s sleep. Staying at this campground saves money compared to the pricey New York City hotels. You can also balance your days with the busy city life and a mix of serene relaxation at the lake or sitting under the stars.
