Visiting the St. Augustine Pirate and Treasure Museum

Uncover the world of pirates at the St. Augustine Pirate and Treasure Museum in Florida. Sitting in the nation’s oldest city, this interactive museum allows visitors a chance to experience piracy up close. You will find authentic artifacts, hands-on exhibits, and tales of high-seas adventures. This experience will be entertaining for both kids and adults, and I was pleasantly surprised how much I enjoyed learning about the history of piracy as we explored the museum, finding treasures along the way.

Address: 12 South Castillo Drive, St Augustine

Hours: Daily from 10am to 7pm

Cost: Adults $18.99, child $9.99. Discounts apply for residents, military and seniors

Gift Shop

Upon entering the museum, you will find a treasure cove of pirate themed trinkets and souvenirs. Grab an eye patch and sword and let the kids enjoy the experience at home while they pretend to be pirates and find buried treasure….argh!!

Interactive Discovery Drawers

Before you head into the museum, let the kids grab a map and search for the hidden drawers located throughout the tour. They will mark what they find in each drawer on the map and at the end they can turn in their map for a golden coin. This was such a fun interactive way for my son to enjoy the museum. He was eager to find the drawers in each room we entered.

Blackbeard and other pirates

As you walk room to room in the museum, you will learn about the history of the most notorious seafarers who once roamed the Caribbean and Atlantic seas. Read about the stories of their lives and see real artifacts related to specific eras or pirates.

Hear about the infamous Blackbeard (Edward Teach), known for his fearsome appearance and dramatic battles before he met his end in 1718. Also hear stories of Calico Jack Rackham and two famous female pirates, Anne Bonney and Mary Read who were fearless leaders in the sea.

Stories of Spanish pirate leaders

Learn about Spanish treasure hunts, pirate raids on Florida’s coast, and battles between pirates and colonial powers fighting for control of the New World. Be amazed at pirate currency dating back to the 1600-1700’s, the most common coins were pieces of eight and gold doubloons and prized by sailors and raiders alike. Pirates often broke these coins into two pieces to make change.

Stop and touch the corner of an actual treasure chest, a rare artifact and the only one known to still exist in the world. Imagine the life of a pirate as you stroll each room, admiring the treasures abound.

Two of St Augustine’s tours below can be booked by clicking the links.

A perfect way to get around St Augustine is with their hop on hop off tour. Highly recommended.

Take a leisurely sunset cruise and view the city lit up at night.

Interactive Cannon

Another favorite with my kids was the interactive cannon. You could touch the cannon with the rod and hear the blast and light of the explosion. My son tried this over and over again.

Final walk-through

A visit to the St. Augustine Pirate and Treasure Museum is more than a walk-through history, it is an adventure for all ages. Your kids will love the hands-on experiences from treasure hunts to interactive displays. Tales of the pirates and rare artifacts, help bring their stories of the past alive. Finding the connection to pirates and Florida help connect the stories and create a fun way to learn more about the piracy past.

This is the perfect way to spend an afternoon, out of the sun, and into a pirate world full of history.

Enjoy the journey,
